Professional Biography: Sayargyi Prof Dr. Maung Thein
MAESA 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award

Sayagyi Professor Dr Maung Thein graduated with BSc (Hons) from Yangon University, and received his PhD from Northwestern University, US in 1966. Since then, he has been tirelessly teaching and mentoring multiple generation of students and staff in Myanmar. There is no one in Myanmar who is most respected and has contributed as much to the development of Earth Sciences in the country. He has written numerous articles on Myanmar Geoscience. His interest and research span from Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Petrology, Tectonics, Ores and Gems to Earthquake and Geohazards. This life-time achievement award is to recognize his outstanding contribution to the long-term development of Earth Sciences in Myanmar.

Professional Biography: Sayargyi U Than Htay
MAESA 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award

Sayagyi U Than Htay obtained his bachelor’s degree in science from Yangon University in 1954, and M.Sc. from McGill University, Canada in 1961. Since then he had worked in Mineral Exploration and Mining Industry in Myanmar for several decades, being involved in many international joint venture programs with the UK, former Yugoslavia, Japan and Germany. His interest and contributions range from Tin-Tungsten, lead-zinc-copper-silver, antimony and gold deposits in Myanmar. He led the discovery of a string of world class ore deposits in Myanmar, including the Tagaung Taung laterite nickel deposit. Respected by overseas geologists, his sharp mind and keen thinking have made him famous among students and researchers from academia and industry, who have benefited from his advice. This life-time achievement award is to recognize his outstanding contribution to the enduring development of Mineral Exploration and the Development of Mineral Industry in Myanmar.
